Bay Windows - what to expect

Bay windows are typically the largest and most complex glazing job in a UK home - three, four or five interconnected units bridging a bay projection, often on a load-bearing wall. Getting them wrong is expensive; getting them right transforms a room and adds resale value.

The price range on bay windows is wider than any other window type because the variables stack: 3-sided vs 5-sided, angle (usually 25° or 45°), whether the bay is squared, canted or bow-shaped, and crucially whether a structural steel is needed above. If your original bay dates from the 1930s or earlier, a steel lintel or reinforced beam is almost always required to meet current Building Regs - budget £600-£1,200 extra for structural work.

The best bay installations use a matched trio: two identical side casements plus a wider central pane (fixed or opening). Cheaper quotes sometimes hide non-matching frame widths or a plain rectangular unit dressed up as a bay - inspect drawings carefully before signing off.
